Comparative ranking of hybrid cars

First of all, there are not that many hybrids on the market to compare. And secondly, they come in all different sizes and shapes, ranking of hybrid cars make it very difficult.

How do you evaluate the ranking judge, for example, a small Toyota Prius, a luxury sedan Lexus LS is a full-size Chevy Silverado comparison? Unlike its hybrid cars, they have very little else in common.

But, it is important to have a comparison before purchase. So, as I always love the challenge, here is my ranking of hybrid cars, which helped me enormously when shopping around.

First, we take a look at the best-selling hybrid cars in the first six months of 2006. According to edmunds.com, they rank as follows:

1st Toyota Prius – 48,156 units
2nd Toyota Highlander Hybrid – 18,127 units
3rd Honda Civic Hybrid – 15,755 units
4th Lexus RX 400h – 11,193 units
5th Ford Escape Hybrid – 10,190 units
6th Toyota Camry Hybrid * – 7386 units
7th Honda Accord Hybrid – 3245 units
8th Mercury Mariner Hybrid – 1461 units
9th Lexus GS 450h – 525 units
10th 10th Honda Insight – 489 units

* (The Toyota Camry Hybrid was released NEW May 2006, but sales in May and June have been second only to the Prius.)

It is easy to see that Toyota hybrid cars are the best seller. The Prius and the Highlander, for instance, are, for almost 50% of the total U.S. market for hybrid capital. When you add in the future figures for the new Camry, this share will increase and Toyota will clearly dominate.

Since the Honda Insight was first introduced in 2000, sales of Honda hybrid cars of more than 2.000% have increased. In 2005, more than 205,000 cars sold and it looks as close to 250,000 sold in 2006.

Hybrids only for about 1% of total U.S. car market, but most experts predict that the change rapidly. It is easy to see why. Are for economic, ecological and political reasons, more and more Americans are looking for fuel efficient automobiles.
